If you were an area scout for a NFL team, who is the guy that you would be pounding the table for in the 6th/7th round because you love him so much and think he will significantly outplay his draft position?

Auburn safety Jamien Sherwood. He didn't run well at his pro day but I think he's a monster. Will dominate on special teams and could be a very good hybrid linebacker/safety type player.

Of the tackles who could be around at pick 31, which ones could be ready to start day 1 at LT for the Chiefs and which ones aren't ready?

Expand full comment
author

One issue is that a lot of the tackles in that range are mostly right-side guys. Jalen Mayfield and Teven Jenkins were right tackles in college. So you're looking at Samuel Cosmi (Texas), Walker Little (Stanford), and Liam Eichenberg (Notre Dame) as true left tackles.

Little was my OT1 headed into the 2019 season. Then he tore his ACL and opted out of 2020. I wouldn't be surprised if teams have a Round 1 on him still there are just a lot of unknowns.

Which position (CB or OL) is deeper for the Jets tackle with 23? With 34?

Expand full comment

OL is deeper, for sure. I think there's a sizeable dropoff at cornerback after Greg Newsome II. I'd probably aim CB at 23 and OL at 34 if those are your targets.

Which QB is the best fit(not the most likely) to the 49ers at 3?

Expand full comment
author

This is such a hard question because we don't know what Shanahan wants to do with his scheme. Based on what he's run in the past, it's Mac Jones (play-action, roll-outs, intermediate accuracy). But if he wants to evolve the scheme, it's Lance or Fields.

Hi Matt, with Carolina aggressively looking at quarterback, do you see any scenerio now where they trade up? Seems tough now that QB's are going 1-2-3 and a trade with Atlanta doesn't really seem plausable.

Now that Austin Blythe has left the Rams to sign with KC, do you think they go interior O-line with their first pick at #57? Someone who can play both guard and center like Josh Myers from Ohio State?

I haven't seen LA really prioritize the OL early in the draft, so I would still expect them to look at offensive/defensive playmakers.

Thanks Matt. In your opinion would Baron Browning from Ohio State or Joe Tryon from UW fit for the Rams at pick 57?

I don't even know what Nagy's system is anymore, honestly. I would guess Kellen Mond if he wanted to get back to the mobility stuff they were doing in KC while he was there.

So my question is based on what you're hearing and not as much rankings...

Do you see any of these players making it to Day 3?

Cam Sample

Tyree Gillespie

Benjamin St Juste

Kendrick Green

Cade Johnson

I'm a big fan of the middle rounds and that's where I like to focus my time when reading up on the draft

I can see Sample and St. Juste making it. Maybe Green, but his stock is really heating up as teams get into more tape.

Honestly very surprised he hasn't been, but they could also keep him as a relatively inexpensive backup or short-term starter until Wilson is ready to play.

Jon Robinson and the Titans have become somewhat notorious for selecting guys in the first round that can’t come in and be day 1 starters or make an immediate impact. Whether it be a Jeffrey Simmons who had to be a wait and see guy due to injury or an Isaiah Wilson who is maybe the biggest bust in the last decade plus. Is that something you attribute to bad scouting and poor talent evaluation or can it simply be chalked up to a string of bad luck? Finally, who is someone you expect to be there at 22 that isn’t a project guy who could step right in and be an impact player for the Titans?

You always say mocks are what you think will happen, not what you would do. That being said, what is it about Ojulari and Phillips that makes you think they will go ahead of Rousseau and Paye (with the later 2 even falling to RD2 in your mocks) even though you have Paye and Rousseau ranked as higher prospects?

I've been becoming more and more intrigued with Dax Milne out of BYU-I think he would be a great fit for the lions in possibly round 4. My question to you is two parts:

Due to it being such an odd year because of covid, do you think teams are more likely to trade back in this draft to acquire future draft picks? I mean I understand trading up for the QB’s in this class but without the combine, players opting out, and so on, teams aren’t able to get a full evaluation of the talent. Curious to hear your take!

This is something I heard more in January as teams were setting their boards. Now, I think there's more of a sentiment that teams can "steal" good prospects this year because boards will be so unique. Also hearing a lot that next year's class isn't viewed very highly by teams.
