Shane Buechele 2021 NFL Draft Scouting Report
Name: Shane Buechele
Position: Quarterback
College: Southern Methodist (SMU)
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 207 lbs
Overall Rank: No. 221 overall
Position Rank: QB11
Strengths: A 46 game starter in college between Texas and SMU, Buechele was a starter as a true freshman for the Longhorns before transfering after losing his job to Sam Ehlinger. He had a great 2019 season (34 TDs, 10 INT, 3929 yards) in his first year starting for the Mustangs and left the program as a team captain. Buechele is a leader with a good understanding of route concepts and progressions. He throws with timing and anticipation and will take what the defense gives him with limited turnovers or poor decisions. His progressions are quick and he’s able to stay in the pocket and read the defense even when things get muddy.
Weaknesses: A lack of size, arm strength and mobility are issues that immediately jump off the tape. Buechele doesn’t have the arm strength to fire the ball with velocity outside the hashes. His deep ball lacks arc and doesn’t fly off his hand. He has a habit of patting the ball before releasing it, which often happens when a quarterback has a smaller hand and needs to increase their grip. His habit of holding the ball low in the pocket will need cleaned up and his throwing motion could stand to be shorter and faster.
What I Love: Experience matters and Buechele has a ton of it. As a 46 game starter he’s seen everything a defense can throw at a college quarterback and had success at two programs.
