Matt Miller's Scouting Notebook: Sneak Peek Scouting Reports for Top 5 QBs
There’s no foreplay this week. We’re getting right to it, breaking down the top five quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL draft class. It’s time. Too many NFL teams find their season damn-near over after just five weeks and too many NFL teams are realizing their plan at quarterback didn’t work.
That’s where we come in.
Yes, we’ll look at other things this week too. You’ll get your NFL draft rumors and news. You’ll get a list of the top head coaching candidates to replace Jon Gruden (and others) when jobs come open. And we’ll dish on games of the week as always.
But if you’re a fan of football, you know how important the quarterback position is. I’d argue it’s the most important position in all of sports. And getting it right when choosing the quarterback is the difference between dynasties and dead-ends.
Job security in the NFL is dictated by winning and winning is dictated by a decision at quarterback; which is why scouting quarterbacks has become the most cost-heavy aspect for every front office.
Evaluating a quarterback is a fluid process. You start with a list—and if you work in the media you have to start with some expectations because readers want rankings Day 1 of the draft process. From there you watch players to see who rises, who falls, who leaves you wanting to see more tape, and you see who leaves you wanting more from the player.
This year we’ve already seen risers (Kenny Pickett) and fallers (Spencer Rattler). We’ve seen highs-and-lows (Sam Howell) and we’ve seen consistently good play from a handful of others.
So, let’s get to it with our sneak peek looks at the top five quarterbacks in the 2022 draft class.
