Jayson Oweh 2021 NFL Draft Scouting Report
Name: Jayson Oweh
Position: Edge-Rusher
College: Penn State
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 257 lbs
Overall Rank: No. 37 overall
Position Rank: EDGE5
Strengths: Jayson Oweh has the prototypical build for an edge-rusher at 6’5”, 257 pounds, 34 1/2” arm length and an insane overall athletic profile. Oweh ran a 4.36-second 40-yard dash at the Penn State pro day and had legendary workout ability before that day. The quickness and raw athleticism shows up on tape as Oweh is agile and fast enough to play in a wide alignment and crash the backfield. His range to run down quarterbacks and running backs is the best in the draft class. Everything he does is explosive with elite twitch and a frame that’s rocked up with muscle. Oweh is a potential over production prospect, but he should have immediate success as a situational pass-rusher in the NFL and can develop into a more consistent performer with additional coaching and reps.
Weaknesses: It’s notable that Oweh didn’t have a single sack in 2020 despite having legendary speed and athleticism. That’s hard to reconcile for some scouts. He’s the definition of athlete over football player and has to improve every facet of the technical side of his game—from hand use to his timing of the snap. His instincts and football IQ need developed. There’s a definite boom-or-bust potential to his game, but at least he should be a solid rotational rusher.
What I Love: Mechanics can be coached. 4.37 speed at 257 pounds cannot. Oweh has arguably the best raw traits of any player at any position in the 2021 class.
