Name: Javonte Williams
Position: Running Back
College: North Carolina
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 220 lbs
Overall Rank: No. 29 overall
Position Rank: RB2
Strengths: A violent runner who looks for contact at times, Javonte Williams was the leader of the North Carolina football program in 2020. Coaches raved about his leadership and his ability to set the tempo for the team. On the field, Williams is a hard to tackle player with limited wear-and-tear coming out of college as he split time with Michael Carter in the Tarheels’ backfield. Williams has a big, powerful build that he uses to power his way through tacklers. He’s able to create space in the backfield and has the agility to separate laterally. His contact balance is among the best you’ll see. Williams wasn’t often used in the passing game, but showed improvement there in 2020. He has a good understanding of route trees and concepts. A goal line monster, Williams will have an immediate value in the pros as a short-yardage back but projects as a long-term starter.
Weaknesses: Like Kareem Hunt, Williams will produce runaway plays but he has build up speed and doesn’t give you a big pop of burst as he starts to pull away. He doesn’t produce many chunk plays and is more of a grinder. Fumbles and dropped passes will bring into question his hands.
What I Love: Williams is a violent runner with excellent finishing ability. Get in his way and he will run you over. His penchant for putting defenders on their backs makes him one of the most fun studies in the entire 2021 draft class.
