Jalen Mayfield 2021 NFL Draft Scouting Report
Name: Jalen Mayfield
Position: Offensive Tackle
College: Michigan
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 326 lbs
Arm Length: 32 5/8”
Overall Rank: No. 62 overall
Position Rank: OT10
Strengths: A quick, athletic right tackle prospect with good poise and recovery agility, Mayfield is a prospect based on potential and upside. He’s quick in the run game and can hitch onto defenders in space. He understands leverage and angles and plays with very good pad height. He has a tough mentality and looks for contact. A natural mover, Mayfield looks smooth in his pass sets and has easy balance to his game. He’s quick and light on his feet and could excel in zone blocking schemes if coached up. His upside as a one-year starter is enormous if coached and given reps.
Weaknesses: A redshirt sophomore entry into the 2021 draft, Mayfield initially opted out of the 2020 season but returned only to have an ankle injury end his season after two games. He’s very light on experience with 13 starts and just 16 total games in college. On tape, a lack of play power is a major concern especially in the lower body. At 326 pounds, Mayfield should be a much better anchor than he is.
What I Love: The arrow is pointing way up on Mayfield, who could turn out to be a much better pro than college player. With such limited tape it’s hard to get a read on what can and cannot be fixed in his game, but he’s a Round 2 player worth betting on.
