We’re live from sunny Mobile, Alabama with notes from the second day of practices. Which players showed up with teams in full pads and more familiarity?

We got you.

Here are our notes on the American and National practices, with nuggets on over 50 players included below. Plus the latest rumors we’re hearing from around the NFL.

League News

  • Ohio State offensive tackle Josh Simmons, who is not participating in the Senior Bowl, is in Mobile this week interviewing with teams. The standout left tackle, who started his career at San Diego State before moving to the Buckeyes, tore his ACL in a game against Oregon in mid-October. We ran into his group on Tuesday night while making the rounds. Our sources tell us that Simmons’ agent Drew Rosenhaus insisted he be here to get ahead of interviews before the NFL scouting combine in late February. One team source told us Simmons is “the most overrated player on media boards right now. No way he goes top 20.”

  • LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell, who is also not participating here after leaving the Tigers following his true junior season, has been praised in conversations with scouts. Campbell was called a “boy scout” by one evaluator we met with. Another said, “he may never be an All-Pro, but he won’t ever lose you games. And he’s a true locker room culture guy.” Teams are very high on the LSU left tackle.

  • Miami quarterback Cam Ward is a hot topic here even if he’s not in attendance. Ward’s high character, leadership and his continued development while moving from Incarnate Ward to Washington State and finally to Miami for this season is mentioned often by scouts. One evaluator told us they loved how quickly Ward entered the Miami program and truly made it his own as a leader. He’s the favorite among scouts to be the first quarterback off the board.

  • Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter is a consensus top three player in the class, but not everyone is in love with the Heisman winner. One scout told us “he’s so overrated. Did you at any point think he was the best receiver in football this year? Or the best corner?” That opinion is not shared by all scouts or teams, but is notable given the widespread praise for the former Buffalo.

Notes on over 50 players from Wednesday’s practices are available for all subscribers.
