There are school supplies on the shelves, fall is right around the corner and I can almost smell the fresh cut grass of my local high school field. After finishing my summer time scouting this is what I’m thinking for an early/preseason look at the 2024 NFL Draft. For this mock draft I used ESPN’s Football Power Index to determine the draft order which just so happens to give the Cardinals the top two picks in the draft.
This year’s class has stars at the quarterback position, with four potential first rounders already, but the EDGE class might be even more impressive with SIX going in the first round. Let’s dive into the first round and see how things shake out!
1. Cardinals: Caleb Williams, QB, USC
The Cardinals are on the clock with pick No. 1 and if this does actually happen you have to wonder about the play of Kyler Murray. Not many teams draft at No. 1 with a franchise quarterback on roster. Therefore, if the Cards are drafting at No. 1 it must mean that Kyler Murray is no longer the guy in Arizona.
Luckily, if the Cardinals are picking at No. 1 they have the opportunity to grab an outstanding quarterback in Caleb Williams. Williams, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner, looks like one of the best prospects we’ve seen in a while. Many scouts have already compared Williams to the 2023 No. 1 pick, Bryce Young, and have said that Williams would have been the top pick in 2023 if he were eligible. It’s a long season and a lot can happen, but right now, Williams looks elite.
2. Cardinals (HOU): Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio State
Again? Didn’t they just pick at no. 1? They did. And they’re back again. The Cardinals own the Texans first pick in 2024 and it looks like it’s going to be a high one. After grabbing their new franchise QB Arizona can go in any direction at two. The second best prospect in this class just might be WR, Marvin Harrison Jr.
Harrison Jr. put on a show in 2022 and will do the same during the 2023 season. The former Biletnikoff Award winner could repeat this season and has a rare blend of size, speed and hands. Even if the Cardinals decide to roll with Kyler Murray after a bad year, they should still target Harrison Jr with one of their top picks.
