The 2024 quarterback class is shaping up to be a very good one. There’s elite talent at the top with USC’s Caleb Williams, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, and maybe even Colorado’s Shadeur Sanders (more on him later).

There is also a lot of bad quarterback play in the NFL. At the risk of triggering fanbases, there will be conversations in Atlanta, Chicago, New England, Pittsburgh and elsewhere about leaning on the incoming class of rookies to replenish the most important position in sports.

So where do things stand?

Think of this as a Supply v. Demand update. Which teams need a quarterback, and which quarterbacks could fill those voids?

DEMAND

The NFL season is roughly 1/4 of the way finished, and while things will definitely change over the next 13 weeks, we have an idea of where teams are slotted in the upcoming draft order. Maybe most importantly, we have an idea of which teams need quarterback help.

Here’s a Week 5 check-in on which teams should be thinking quarterback do-overs.

Chicago Bears

Current Record: 0-4 | Current Draft Position: Nos. 1 and 2 (via Carolina) Overall

Justin Fields showed improvement in the Bears’ Week 4 loss to the Denver Broncos, but his two second half turnovers allowed a comeback and contributed to another loss. Fields isn’t alone to blame—how about that “scheme”?—but if the Bears have a top pick, Caleb Williams will be the selection and Fields will be looking for a new start. It’s that simple. And it might be what’s best for the former first-rounder.

Las Vegas Raiders

Current Record: 1-3 | Current Draft Position: No. 3 overall

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Jimmy Garoppolo is hurt and has been average when healthy. The story that played out in San Francisco is playing out in Las Vegas, and if the Raiders have a top three pick there will be an investment in a rookie quarterback as long as two aren’t drafted ahead of them. And perhaps even if they are, depending on which players enter the draft (see below for that).
