The NFL and NCAA decided years ago, in 1990, to create a rule allowing “student athletes” to only declare for the NFL draft after three years of college play. Prior to this, underclassmen weren’t even allowed to enter the NFL draft.

Oh how the turntables have turned.

Now we live in an era dominated by freshman right out of college. Some are 17-year old superstars like Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams or Dylan Raiola at Nebraska. And while we’re not arguing for an abolishment of the current rules, it is fun to look ahead to the future while putting an initial ranking on these players.

You have to suspend some disbelief for this exercise, but it basically boils down to this: if every player were available to be drafted, how would they be ranked based on current ability and future potential? Some players listed haven’t touched the field yet, so we reserve the right to amend our rankings once they do play, but this is a fun starting point based on our scouting and our conversations with NFL scouts and college coaches.
