BYU vs Iowa State could have HUGE implications on the College Football Playoff Bracket. The two undefeated Big 12 teams don’t play each other in the regular season, which means they could go into the Big 12 Championship game undefeated! Winner gets the 4 Seed, loser gets bounced! Another interesting matchup, as of now, would be Texas and Texas A&M! The two are set to play each other on November 30th but there is also a slim chance they could meet in the SEC Championship game, too. Lastly, Notre Dame has entered the chat. The Fightin’ Irish have had an uphill climb but finally find themselves in the mix.

I still can’t look at this bracket without thinking the No. 5 seed has the easiest road to the National Championship. Play Boise, Iowa State and then the No. 1 seed. But the No. 1 seed is going to take on a tough, most likely, SEC team.

My Top 25. This week has a lot of teams dropping down and dropping out - making room for teams like Northern Illinois and Nebraska!

With the top 25 taking shape we can start to look to the College Football Playoff Bracket. The top four conference winners get the top four spots and a bye, with spots 5-12 playing in the first round. The 5, 6, 7 and 8 seed host a home game! NIU sneaks in as the top rated Group of 5 champion [I used the AP ranking for the bracket].

Predictive Champs Right Now:
SEC Champ: Georgia
Big Ten Champ: Ohio State
ACC Champ: Miami
Big 12 Champ: Oklahoma State

It’s going to take awhile to get used to the CFP bracket and moving away from valuing the top 25 rankings each week. For example: Texas is up to No. 2 in the AP poll but still come in at No. 5 in the bracket because of conference champions getting the top four spots.

We are just one week into the season but the race for the Heisman trophy is already underway. A few players had an impressive first week and while it is not required to have an amazing first game, it sure does help. Let’s look at some guys who helped their Heisman Stock.

Cam Ward, Miami: I was skeptical of the Ward hype but Miami went into Gainesville on Saturday and put up 41 points. Much of that from Ward’s arm and his three touchdowns.

The transfer portal has been an exciting addition to college football. In years past it has been a way for good players at small programs to transfer to big time programs. However, this summer it has emerged into something different - players look for big paydays. And I don’t blame them. Let’s take a look at how the transfer portal will impact the 2024 college football season.

Highlights: Oregon scored an outstanding 44.2 points a game with Bo Nix at quarterback in 2023. I don’t expect the production to dip in 2024 with Dillon Gabriel leading the offense. Gabriel threw for 3660 yards and 30 TDs at Oklahoma this year and he is joining an offense with a lot more talent this season.

Ranking the top units is one of my favorite summer projects. For the most part we know the top players but the top units encompass the whole position room. Colorado has a top talent in Shedeur Sanders but not much depth behind him - so you won’t see Colorado on this list. Ohio State has a solid starter in Will Howard but two high profile backups (for now) in Julian Sayin and Devin Brown - which puts them near the top of the list. Here is my breakdown of the top position units going into the 2024 college football season.

OFFENSIVE UNITS

Quarterbacks
1. Texas
The Longhorns return one of the top quarterbacks in the nation in Quinn Ewers, who could very well be the first quarterback taken in the 2025 NFL Draft. But these rankings rely on more than just the top guy and the backup at Texas is what puts Texas at No. 1. Texas has the most exciting backup QB in college football - possibly ever! Arch Manning is sitting and waiting for another year and should see more playing time this year than last. Ewers has a history of missing games but the Longhorns offense shouldn’t miss a beat with Arch as QB2. Outside of Ewers and Manning, Texas also has freshman Trey Owens that looked very good in the Texas spring game.

2. Oregon
The Ducks lost two-year starter and Heisman candidate Bo Nix but did a remarkable job replacing him in the transfer portal with not one, but two quarterbacks. Dillon Gabriel was a top passer and Hiesman trophy in 2023 as well but did so with Oklahoma. Gabriel was a big surprise in the transfer portal and will once again be a top Hiesman candidate in 2024 - this time with Oregon. Head coach Dan Lanning didn’t stop there though. The Ducks also added former 5-star QB Dante Moore from UCLA. Moore played well in his first season at UCLA and is more than capable of taking over the Oregon offense. Look for Moore and incoming freshman, Luke Moga, to battle for the future starting job.

This week we will preview the offensive awards for the 2024 season and look at the top QBs, RBs, WRs, TEs and OL. The Heisman Award has become increasingly hard for players that are not quarterbacks to win but we will still look at some of the top candidates. After all, Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon is in for a massive year. Gordon is going to compete against multiple top quarterbacks including Quinn Ewers, Carson Beck, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.

The Big 12 continues to stay in headlines and honestly I’m here for it. The Big 12 almost died, and many like myself thought they would, after Texas and Oklahoma left for the SEC. Commissioner Brett Yormark has done an outstanding job of not only keeping this conferences together but actually expanding it. This season the Big 12 will add Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah. Bringing the conference to 16 teams (which is weird but better than 10!). Picking the top quarterback for the Big Ten was EASY. Dillon Gabriel is the clear cut top passer in the conference and is going to put up huge numbers t=for the Ducks. The question is which receiver is going to be WR1? Tez Johnson returns to Oregon after 86 catches, 1182 yards and 10 TDs - I think it’s safe to say he will be a favorite target again in 2024. Not only does Oregon have a top QB and receivers, they also have an outstanding offensive line led by OT Ajani Cornelius. The Ducks might win the conference their first year in.

The Oregon offense was outstanding last year and even though they lost Bo Nix to the NFL, this offense might actually be…better. Bringing in Dillon Gabriel to run this offense was huge for the Ducks and keeps their offense as one of the top in the country. Gabriel will have a ton of options to throw to, including Tez Johnson who I view as WR1 in Oregon.

Quarterback:
Noah Fifita, Arizona — Fifita already had his mini-breakout season last year but the Arizona Wildcats are going to be a force this season. Led by Fifita, Arizona will have a top offense in the Big 12 (that feels weird) and make noise Nationally. Last season Fifita took over the starting role in the 4th game of the season and threw for 2869 yards and 25 TDs. I expect those numbers to go up significantly now that he is the Day 1 starter.

Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss — Many people wondered who the starting QB would be for Ole Miss at the beginning of last season, but Dart won the job and never looked back. This season, his 3rd starting for Ole Miss, has the chance to explode for Dart. Lane Kiffin and the Rebels were hot in the SEC last season and another big year from the offense could put them near the top of the conference and playing for a National Championship.
